OSRAM x Connected Cars: making mobility safer through connectivity

Osram needed a smart data solution. Data is the main innovation driver across several industries, and the car industry is no exception. Car data brings new possibilities for solving existing challenges. It helps to increase safety, comfort, and convenience.

Osram’s challenge

OSRAM, is an international company specializing in lighting solutions. They saw the need for a smart and efficient way to inform drivers about the headlight status.

A technology frontrunner, OSRAM recognized the potential and value of car data. They reached out to Connected Cars to explore new connectivity opportunities.

“Working with Connected Cars on this project, Iโ€™ve learned how they work with big data to develop tools, models, and analyses.”

To be able to use and work with data hands-on has taught me and the OSRAM team a lot about the complexities and mechanisms behind data. We have gained knowledge and insights. We can use these in the future for other projects.”

Solution

The data science team at Connected Cars, together with the team at OSRAM, developed a pilot project whose aim was to build a model that would predict when a driver would need to have their headlights checked and changed. They created a model by combining data from 100.000+ cars with OSRAMโ€™s 110+ years of market knowledge and experience.

The model generated a campaign that would inform drivers as soon as it was time to check and change their headlights. Throughout all Denmark, they used Connected Carsโ€™ network of connected workshops. They used the built-in marketing platform in the Connected Cars driver app to send push notifications to users. These were about the time of the headlight change.

Results

This pilot project is a clear example of how collaboration across industries and countries is successful. OSRAMโ€™s commitment to innovation and Connected Carsโ€™ experience in working with big data have contributed to effectively turning data into more safety and convenience for drivers.

Through our collaboration with Connected Cars, weโ€™ve developed a pilot project. That enables us to combine safety on the roads through better headlights with data-driven personalized notifications for drivers. This, for us, shows great promise.

Additionally, workshops can provide better service and improve customer experience. OSRAM can become a preferred vendor for workshops. They took the lead to develop an innovative, data-based solution to change the habit of replacing headlights. Changing headlights prior to burning out is essential to ensuring full visibility and driver safety on the roads.

Overall, the implementation and execution of the pilot project show a successful effort in combining technology, big data, connectivity, and marketing to make mobility safer.
